Project Blue Book Case File
Farmingdale, New YorkNovember 1957
Summary
On November 6, 1957, a civilian woman driving near Farmingdale, New York, reported an object at night. She was driving north on a parkway when she saw a bright white light about 100 feet in front of her car. The light stayed at the same distance for about five minutes.
As she passed under an overpass, she lost sight of the object and her car radio cut off. The object reappeared about 50 feet ahead, this time surrounded by a flaming red mass as large as a car. Frightened, she pressed the gas and sped toward it. As she reached it, the object lifted and passed overhead, and her radio came back on. A later recheck of the site by the witness and her husband found nothing. Surface winds were light.
This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. Officers noted there was no air or ground traffic at the time. The Air Force suggested the report was possibly caused by lightning and listed it as insufficient data, calling it a possibly unreliable report.
