Project Blue Book Case File
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIASeptember 1952
Summary
On September 12, 1952, at around 8:02 p.m., a naval officer (a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy) sitting in his dining room in Fairfax, Virginia, spotted an unusual object through his window. He described it as a slightly oblong, solid mass with a soft incandescent outline. The object moved horizontally across his field of vision.
The sighting lasted only about three seconds. The observer noted that his viewing position was not ideal for making precise observations. He saw the object through window glass while seated at dinner. According to local newspaper reports at the time, the object was initially reported as a meteor.
The U.S. Air Force received a report of the sighting and requested the observer complete a standard questionnaire. The completed form and related materials were forwarded to the Air Force Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio for review. The file indicates that at least one other witness, identified as Miss [name redacted], also submitted a questionnaire about the incident.
The Air Force evaluated this case and determined that the object remained unidentified. The full case file, including the observer's questionnaire responses, witness statements, and Air Force analysis, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives and spans 10 pages of microfilm.
