Project Blue Book Case File
Dallas, TexasMay 1949
Summary
On the evening of May 21, 1949, multiple witnesses in Dallas, Texas reported seeing a group of unusual objects moving across the sky. The sightings occurred between approximately 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m., with observers reporting anywhere from 20 to 100 objects arranged in loose formations.
The objects were described in various ways depending on the witness: some compared them to a mercury vapor lamp glowing from yellow to green, others saw them as resembling a smoke ring or arrowhead with a round center. One observer described about 75 to 100 smaller objects in an irregular line, each roughly the size of a man's fist held at arm's length. The objects appeared as bright as a five-watt light bulb, though some witnesses said the light was translucent or dim. They moved in uniform flight patterns from east to west across the sky at estimated speeds between 800 and 3,000 miles per hour, at altitudes ranging from about 3,000 to 50,000 feet. Most sightings lasted between 3 and 95 seconds before the objects faded from sight.
The U.S. Army's Fourth Army intelligence officers interviewed five civilian witnesses between May 21 and May 25, 1949. The observers included an agriculture teacher, a construction foreman, a mail clerk, a shoe salesman, and a housewife. The intelligence reports noted that the witnesses appeared sincere, with above-average intelligence and good observational ability. Weather conditions at the time included clear skies, though some lightning and factory smoke were noted in the distance.
The Air Force's conclusion, listed at the top of the case file, attributed the sightings to the reflection of light off birds' bodies at a considerable distance, which it said would create the illusion of numerous objects traveling at high speed. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 23 pages.
