Summary

This card covers a series of sightings near Cunningham, Tennessee, in August 1956.

On August 9, 1956, recorded at 0225Z, a civilian ground observer reported one round object the size of a dinner plate held at arm's length. The object changed color from red to orange to yellow, then faded out after about twelve to fifteen minutes. The witness said it moved slowly, stopping at times, from the northeast to the northwest, and descended from about 3,000 feet to 1,000 feet. Another witness reported a sound like a helicopter.

On August 11, 1956, recorded at 0238Z, a ground observer reported one round, bright red object the size of a basketball held at arm's length. It was red when still and white when moving, and made an unfamiliar sound. The object hovered for two or three minutes, moved slowly west, hovered again, then faded out after about ten to fifteen minutes.

The Air Force did not agree these were balloons. After reviewing returned forms, it concluded the sightings were possibly aircraft, most likely a helicopter, perhaps from a nearby fort.
