Project Blue Book Case File
Crane, IndianaOctober 1954
Summary
On the night of October 8, 1954, a man and his wife reported an object near Crane, Indiana. The man was a civilian employee at a naval ammunition depot and was described as a reliable worker. The sighting lasted about 3 to 5 seconds.
The couple were outside when they saw an object racing through the sky on a level path. It was oval in shape and looked about 75 feet long. It was ringed with a brilliant blue violet flame and trailed a stream of fire about six times its own length, with occasional bursts of white fire. It made a high, barely audible sound like a ricochet. The man estimated its height at 800 to 1,000 feet and said its speed was terrific, far faster than a jet. It headed in a northeast by east direction. The night was clear with light wind and good visibility.
The Air Force record listed the conclusion as probably astronomical, a meteor. The case was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
