Summary

On July 3, 1948, a female civilian in Columbus, Ohio reported observing a cigar or tornado-shaped object with binoculars (M-3, 6 x 30). The object appeared silver in color. The witness reported the object bobbed up and down for about 4 minutes. Ground observation confirmed the sighting. The Air Force investigator concluded there was nothing of astronomical character in this incident. The investigator's opinion was that the objects were aircraft, and the bobbing up and down motion could be explained as a seeing effect caused by distortion of the image by air currents.
