Summary

On the afternoon of Friday, November 8, 1957, about 100 people reported seeing an unidentified flying object over Columbia, Tennessee and Maury County. Some watched it through binoculars. Several experienced observers said it was a high-flying jet plane.

A local newspaper editor wrote to the Air Force. He said a check with the nearest filter center found no aircraft reported in the area at that time. He asked whether a foreign nation might be flying jets over the United States without the Air Force's knowledge.

The Air Force replied that this sighting had never been reported to its intelligence center and asked for more details. It said the idea that the object came from another country was entirely unfounded and that there was no evidence to support it.

The Air Force listed the case as aircraft. The record card called it an obvious aircraft sighting. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
