Summary
On the night of June 23, 1957, six civilians near Carmichael, California saw a bright yellow-white light rise slowly from near tree-top level, hover for several minutes, then climb steeply into the sky. One of the witnesses was an Air Force navigator; the group watched for about thirty minutes as the object moved across the sky in what some described as a triangular shape. A couple viewing the scene from a drive-in theater a mile and a half away also saw the object and compared notes with the main group.
The witnesses described the object as displaying a steady white light, with some observers reporting a red glow on the left side and orange at the rear. One witness heard a steady humming sound. The object appeared to climb at a steep angle and moved on a northeast course, eventually fading from sight at an altitude they estimated around 20,000 feet. Estimates of the object's speed varied widely among observers, ranging from 130 to 500 knots, depending on the direction of travel and method of observation. One witness estimated the object's size as similar to a B-27 aircraft. The object left no visible trails or trails of any kind.
The Air Force investigation examined several possible explanations. Weather data from the region showed a strong temperature inversion in the lower atmosphere that night, which can create mirages and distort the appearance of distant lights and objects. Investigators checked with military and civilian aviation authorities and found that Navy fighters were conducting practice intercepts in the area that evening, with some operating around 22,000 feet. The investigators noted that a Navy fighter executing an intercept maneuver could appear triangular to an observer on the ground if its wing edges were not clearly visible. The object's reported sound and lights were also consistent with jet aircraft operations. However, the official Air Force evaluation form indicated the sighting remained classified as "unknown," though the investigating officer's final comments suggested the sighting was "probably caused by aircraft."
