Cape Vincent, New YorkMarch 1953
Summary
On March 19, 1953, starting at about 2105 (9:05 p.m.) Eastern time, civilians reported a glowing object near Cape Vincent, New York. The report reached the 655th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron through a ground observer post.
The object was a ball of fire with an orange border. It seemed to hang in the sky at a low altitude and always seemed to move toward the north. It was northwest of the observers. They saw it about eight or nine times over four hours, for about 15 to 30 minutes each time, and could see it through clouds. Witnesses said similar objects had been seen before but never reported.
The sky was overcast at 3,000 feet with southwest winds. The object was not picked up on radar at the site. The Air Force concluded the cause was astronomical, the planet Venus, which was in that position at the time.
