Canal Zone, Panama, March 1953March 1953
Summary
On March 28, 1953, at 0031 (use of the Z time group), a military pilot reported an object over the Canal Zone in Panama. The witness was the pilot of a B-26 aircraft flying at 5,000 feet at about 220 miles per hour. The report came from Albrook Air Force Base.
The object was a fiery, ball shaped light. It was at about the 10 o'clock position, two to three miles from the aircraft, on a course parallel to the plane. The pilot estimated its speed at about 240 knots. The object disappeared in a downward dive with no unusual maneuver. The sighting lasted about 40 minutes.
The weather was hazy. The experienced and reliable pilot did not alert the rest of the crew, so no one else confirmed it. There was no known air traffic in the area. The Air Force concluded the cause was astronomical, the planet Venus.
