Summary

On September 26, 1960, six observers near Camp Irwin, California, reported a large object at about 1000 (10:00 a.m.) GMT, during night hours local. They described a sphere the size of a tractor trailer, greenish in color, trailing red and orange flames and giving off smoke. It was brighter than the sky. The object flew on an unknown course parallel to the ground at an estimated altitude of 3,600 feet, then disappeared over the horizon. Its speed was estimated as very fast, about 400 to 450 mph. The sighting lasted about 1 minute 30 seconds. A follow-up report was not received. The Air Force listed the case as a probable missile sighting, noting the sighting had the characteristics of a missile and nothing indicated otherwise.
