Summary

On October 14, 1957, a science class at Camp Hill, Alabama, saw an object in the sky. The witnesses were a science instructor and a student at a military academy. They were watching for an artificial moon (a satellite) when they saw the object. The sighting was a ground visual observation made with 8x57 binoculars.

The object was round and reddish yellow. It was very small compared to the artificial moon. It moved at a very high rate of speed in a straight line across the sky from north to south. It then disappeared behind buildings. It was in sight for about 10 to 12 seconds. The object was about 75 degrees above the horizon. The witnesses estimated a very high speed. The sky was high overcast with clear conditions reported by the observers.

This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. An officer believed the observers were reliable. The Air Force listed the conclusion as possibly astronomical, a possible meteor.
