Project Blue Book Case File
Camp Carson, Colorado, Spring 1950Circa 1950
Summary
In the spring of 1950, an officer stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado, saw an object streak across the northeastern sky. The observer watched it for about seven seconds. The object appeared dark colored and solid looking, with fuzzy or blurred edges. It moved in a straight line at an extremely high speed and left no visible exhaust or vapor trail.
The Air Force received the official report years later, in 1966, when the retired colonel submitted a formal questionnaire about his sighting. By then, sixteen years had passed. The Air Force screened its 1950 case files but initially could not locate a record of the observation, suggesting it may have been filed at the base level rather than sent to Project Blue Book headquarters at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. When the Air Force finally did review the case with the new information provided, it concluded there was insufficient data to determine what the officer had seen.
The retired colonel expressed frustration with the Air Force's response. He said he had reported the sighting through proper channels at the time and believed he knew what he had witnessed. He disagreed with the Air Force's general explanations of UFO sightings and made clear he would continue treating the incident as a matter of public record. The Air Force acknowledged it was impossible to study the case thoroughly so many years after the fact, since atmospheric conditions and other details of that day could not be recreated or verified.
