Summary

On February 16, 1958, near Caliente, Nevada, a civilian reported seeing a bright white object about the size of a grapefruit moving slowly to the south. The object was observed for 15 minutes around dusk. No sound or trail was heard or seen. The Air Force received the report at Bakersfield, California from SSGT Leonette ADFC. The object was described as three to four miles high and moving in a straight line very slowly. The witness observed it with ground-visual equipment. The Air Force noted no elevation, azimuth, or wind information was available. The case was evaluated as possibly a weather balloon, though the Air Force stated it could not conclude with certainty due to missing data.
