Summary

On the night of August 12, 1952, around 10:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, dozens of people at the Terrace Drive-In theater near Bakersfield, California, saw something unusual moving across the sky. Deputy Sheriff Leroy Hatfield received a telephone call about the sighting and later interviewed witnesses at the theater. What people reported was confusing and varied, but many described either a group of bright or dim lights, or a single large object. Some said it was triangular or crescent-shaped. Some compared it to a crop-duster helicopter. Others saw it as a large, dark form outlined by lights.

The most detailed account came from a man who was sitting in his car at the theater. He watched lights moving in a generally northeasterly direction from a location south of the screen. At first he thought it might be a helicopter, but the object made a sharp turn toward the southeast without slowing down, then curved back to the northeast and climbed steeply. He emphasized that he heard no sound from the object at any time and that it definitely was not a helicopter. He was familiar with both light aircraft and military jets, conventional and experimental. The lights appeared to fade and brighten as the object maneuvered, suggesting it might be multiple light sources seen from different angles as the object changed position.

An Air Force intelligence officer visited Bakersfield on August 14 and interviewed witnesses. After reviewing the statements, the officer concluded that the object was not an aircraft or helicopter, that it had been visible enough to distract the movie-goers, and that its reported movements did not match the capabilities of any known aircraft, conventional or experimental. The officer recommended further investigation by military personnel or by the Air Force Technical Intelligence Center. The case file also includes a separate report from a U.S. Air Force F-94 interceptor pilot over Delaware on August 12, 1952, who observed a bright white light that maneuvered in ways that seemed unusual, though the OCR text of that section is heavily garbled. The full case file, comprising 15 pages as scanned from National Archives microfilm T1206, Roll 14, is reproduced below.
