Summary
On the evening of September 13, 1960, a woman in Bucyrus, Ohio saw an unusual object in the sky from her home. The object was bright, transparent, and had what she described as "two wings" inside. It moved slowly across the sky and faded away after several minutes. A little later that same night, she saw a second object, very similar in appearance and brightness. This one moved in the same direction as the first. Around 4:15 a.m., a third object appeared, which she described as roughly the size of a tree, with orange coloring and "five wings" that were illuminated. It moved higher into the sky and eventually disappeared.
The woman reported that these were among several objects she had observed over roughly a three-month period. Some appeared in June, others in July, and at least one more in August. She described some as smaller than others.
The Air Force's investigation concluded that most of the sightings had straightforward explanations. The first object was likely the result of atmospheric refraction of the planet Venus (the bending of light as it passes through layers of air at different temperatures). The objects from the second sighting were probably Venus and the star Sirius. The third sighting was attributed to the bright star Regulus. However, the Air Force noted that the fourth and final object the woman reported had been previously reported to the Foreign Technology Division on multiple occasions. As of the file's date, no final conclusion about that object's identity had been reached, though officials suspected it might be the Soviet satellite Lunik III.
