Project Blue Book Case File
Brookville, Long Island, New YorkJuly 1960
Summary
On the evening of July 4, 1960, two witnesses in Brookville, Long Island observed three circular objects moving silently across a clear sky. The sighting lasted approximately 1.5 to 2 minutes, according to the initial report card. The objects appeared pearly or platinum in color, similar to the moon. They maintained a V-formation as they traveled southwest across the sky, beginning at a low angle of elevation (10 degrees above the horizon) and moving to a higher angle (60 degrees) before disappearing.
About two-thirds of the way across the sky, one of the three objects broke formation and moved straight upward, while the other two continued on their original course. The witnesses estimated the objects were traveling at roughly 1.5 times the speed of a fighter plane, though the Air Force noted that this speed estimate may not have been accurate. One witness reported seeing what appeared to be whirling rings around the objects.
The Air Force requested that both witnesses complete detailed questionnaires to gather more information about the sighting. The case file contains the initial report letter and correspondence requesting the questionnaire responses, though the completed forms in this file are heavily degraded and largely illegible in the OCR'd text.
The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably caused by a high-flying aircraft, noting that the witnesses' speed estimates may have been inaccurate. The full case file, comprising 18 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
