Project Blue Book Case File
Boise, IdahoJuly 1949
Summary
On the evening of July 5, 1949, civilian witnesses watched an unusual object in the sky northwest of Boise, Idaho, from a high point along Skyline Road. They described a brilliant silver, round object that appeared very high and moved at great speed, making steady loops and turns. At times it seemed to give off occasional puffs of greyish smoke or vapor. The sun had just set. The object remained in view for about 25 minutes, moving toward the southwest. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations interviewed the witnesses and looked into the sighting. The Air Force concluded that the object was probably a high-altitude research balloon that was still catching sunlight after the sun had set at ground level.
