Summary

On September 23, 1960, military personnel at Bitburg Air Base in Germany reported a luminous streak at 0119 (1:19 a.m.). The object looked like a shooting star, red and yellow in color, and left a trail. It appeared very suddenly, red at first, then gradually changed to bright yellow. It moved from southwest to northeast at an elevation of 8 to 13 degrees. The path briefly broke, and the object turned red again when it reappeared. There was no smoke but numerous sparks. It looked much larger than a normal shooting star. The Air Force listed the case as a satellite reentry. The card noted a rocket body reentered on this date and the description matched in direction, color, and breaking up, though the duration was not recorded.
