Project Blue Book Case File
Beavercreek, OhioJune 1963
Summary
On June 22, 1963, a civilian observer in Beavercreek, Ohio watched an unusual object through binoculars for about 10 to 15 minutes. The object appeared metallic and shiny, with a haze around it. It resembled a balloon that was climbing higher and higher into the sky. The observer watched it move from the northeast toward the east, becoming smaller as it rose, and eventually disappearing from view. The object appeared to be positioned over Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
The observer noted that the object had a light-like appendage and described its ascent as matching the behavior of a balloon climbing through the atmosphere. According to the official report card, the Air Force concluded the object was "probably a balloon." The case file notes that the description and the object's flight pattern were consistent with a balloon analysis. However, the original investigation form included "unidentified" as the evaluation, suggesting some initial uncertainty about the sighting.
A related sighting was reported the next day, June 23, 1963, from Chicago, Illinois, though that case was deemed to have insufficient data for evaluation. The full case file, as preserved in the National Archives, contains 11 pages including the witness questionnaire, official record cards, and Air Force analysis.
