Project Blue Book Case File
Baltimore, MarylandNovember 1957
Summary
In November 1957, a person in Baltimore, Maryland saw something unusual in the night sky and reported it to the U.S. Air Force. The observer said the object appeared on November 6, 1957, between 9:43 and 9:47 p.m. The witness described themselves as an amateur astronomer with hundreds of hours of night sky observation, and said they had never seen anything like it before.
The witness initially sent their report to the Air Force in December 1957, but there was some confusion about dates. In follow-up letters written in late 1958, the witness asked the Air Force to classify their sighting into one of the Air Force's six categories of UFO reports and to provide details about what they had observed. The witness also wanted to know if any other sightings had been reported from Baltimore on that same night.
The Air Force conducted a thorough search of its records but found no trace of the original sighting report. According to internal memos, the Air Force's Air Technical Intelligence Center did not receive the report the witness claimed to have submitted. Multiple searches of Air Force files for Maryland sightings on or near November 6, 1957 turned up nothing. The Air Force also found no other reports from Baltimore on that date. In its final response to the witness in December 1958, the Air Force stated it could not locate the sighting in its records.
The case file offers no Air Force evaluation of what the object might have been, since no official record of the sighting was ever found in Air Force files. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 10 pages.
