Project Blue Book Case File
Aurora, ColoradoAugust 1962
Summary
On August 26, 1962, at 1845 (6:45 p.m.), just after sunset, a man reported an object over Del Mar Park in Aurora, Colorado. The witness was in the Marine Corps recruiting service. The sky was in dusk, with no stars yet and Venus not yet risen. The sighting lasted only seconds.
The man said the object was much larger than a DC-8 jet, about twice its size. It came from the west over the mountains, heading east, and was golden in color, brighter than Venus. Its core was a golden gray, darker than the rest. The shape was between an egg and a cigar. It made a right angle turn and headed south, then made another right angle turn and went straight up. It then appeared to start a backward roll and was lost from sight. The brightness stayed constant.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force noted the possibility of light reflected from a bird but said the data was not conclusive. The case was considered insufficient data because the quality of the information was not enough for a firm analysis.
