Summary
On July 21, 1956, near Auburn, California, civilian observers reported one object at about 1:00 p.m. local time. It was a ground visual sighting. The object was in view for two to three minutes.
The object was shaped like a guided missile and was seven to eight feet long. Its color was green and orange. It gave off chunks of fire. There was no sound. The object appeared about 200 feet above the North Fork of the American River and followed the course of the river, turning with it.
The weather was fair with unlimited visibility. The report was relayed by a newspaper editor who gave it credit because the witness was an outstanding citizen. The Air Force concluded on its Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, that the object was probably a light plane.
