Summary
On March 20, 1953, at 0730 (use of the Z time group), and again on April 4, 1953, a civilian reported a bright light near Anchorage, Alaska. The witness was a special investigator employed by the Alaska Railroad. He watched from his home. Two other people saw it on both occasions.
The light was in the direction of Mt. Susitna, about 23 degrees above the horizon. It was about the size of a basketball and estimated to be 70 miles away. On March 20 the weather was clear with 20 miles visibility. On April 4 there were scattered clouds at 8,000 feet and 15 miles visibility.
The preparing officer said the source may have seen the planet Jupiter, which was very bright in the same position. The Air Force concluded the cause was astronomical, the planet Jupiter.
