Unidentified

Summary

On August 26, 1952, a captain in the U.S. Air Force saw three pink objects flying in formation near Amarillo, Texas. The observer was standing on the ground facing roughly southwest when he spotted the objects at approximately 2:45 p.m. central time. His wife also witnessed the sighting. The objects appeared to be about four to five inches in diameter (when viewed from the observer's perspective) and were traveling in a steady formation heading south-southeast.

The three objects moved together in what looked like a V-formation, then appeared to merge into a single object. This merged object turned toward a bearing of 52 degrees and angled downward, then faded from view. The entire sighting lasted about two seconds. The observer estimated the objects were roughly four to five miles away and at an altitude of about 3,200 to 3,500 feet above sea level. There was no sound, and the observer reported no propulsion system was visible. No one attempted to intercept the objects.

Weather conditions at the time were clear with excellent visibility of fifteen miles or more. The temperature was 86 degrees with surface winds from the south at 14 knots. Winds at various altitudes were recorded, ranging from roughly 190 to 292 degrees and moving at 13 to 23 knots. No thunderstorms or atmospheric inversions were noted in the area. The observer was a rated senior pilot with over 2,300 flight hours, which the Air Force considered credible.

The Air Force investigation found no physical evidence and no radar confirmation. Air traffic records showed only a C-47 aircraft in the area two minutes before the sighting, heading east at about 2,000 feet, which would not match the observer's report. In its final evaluation, the Air Force marked this case as "unidentified," though notes on the form suggest the evaluators considered balloon and aircraft possibilities as well. The complete case file, drawn from the National Archives, spans 7 pages.
