Project Blue Book Case File
Albuquerque, New MexicoJanuary 1953
Summary
On January 31, 1953, an aerial phenomenon was reported near Albuquerque, New Mexico, and photographed by a civilian. The case came to the Air Force through a newspaper clipping from the Albuquerque Journal, dated February 1, 1953.
The witness said he saw an object due west of a local theater that seemed to hover over the city. He gauged it as 15 to 20 degrees above the horizon. He said it was fairly good-sized and looked larger than a star. It was not moving. He said it appeared white but briefly changed to blue and red while it remained still.
The witness took photographs but sent the undeveloped negatives to a magazine before he could be interviewed, so the Air Force did not have the photos. The possibility of a meteor was ruled out by a scientist who was consulted. An intelligence officer noted the witness's account was sketchy and hard to explore without the photos.
The Air Force record card does not give a clear final conclusion for this report.
