Albuquerque, New MexicoFebruary 1950
Summary
On the night of February 25, 1950, a university student in Albuquerque, New Mexico, reported a single bright object. The time was about 9:15 p.m. He was sitting in a living room looking west when he saw it. The object was in sight for about one and a half seconds at most.
The witness, a journalism student, described the object as about three times the size of a shooting star, with a tear drop shape and a short tail. Its color was a bright greenish white, like a parachute flare, and it left a reddish glow behind it. It fell almost straight down, slightly off vertical, toward the south, with a small trail. He heard no sound and noticed no odor. It appeared to burn out as it disappeared.
The report notes the student had been interested in writing about flying saucers and other sky phenomena, which is why the sighting caught his attention. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was astronomical, listed as a meteor.
