Summary
On May 20, 1956, near Akpatok Island, off Newfoundland, the pilot and co-pilot of a Royal Canadian Air Force DC-4 reported one object. It was an air visual sighting at about 12:10 a.m. local time. The object was in view for 4 to 5 seconds.
The plane was flying from CYFB to CYYY on a 225 degree magnetic heading. The object appeared directly in front of the plane and then passed off the starboard side. It was shaped like a ball of fire trailing light. Its color was orange. The crew estimated its speed at 600 to 1,000 knots. Its range from the aircraft was 5 to 17 miles.
Visibility was good with a scattered cloud layer above. It was not complete darkness. Both crew members were sure the object was not a star. The Air Force concluded on its Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, that the sighting was a meteor.
