Summary

On February 28, 1961, around 7:30 p.m. local time, military observers at Adair Air Force Station, Oregon, reported a white, star like object. The witnesses were three Air Force officers, listed as probably reliable. The object was seen for about 20 minutes and stayed stationary. It was about the size of a pencil eraser at arm's length.

The object appeared and disappeared at about 40 degrees elevation and 270 degrees azimuth. It showed no motion and simply faded from view. The object was described as exceptionally bright.

The Air Force card states the object faded after being viewed for 20 minutes with no perceptible movement. It concludes the object was probably the planet Mars, which was very bright at that time of year and was in the position reported. The disappearance was probably due to clouds moving between the witnesses and the planet.
