Summary

On May 14, 1956, near Winston Salem, North Carolina, observers reported a single object about 80 kilometers southwest of the city. The sighting was an air visual observation. It lasted about 39 minutes.

The object was round and cylindrical. It was the size of a pencil eraser held at arm's length. Its color was silvery white with clean white edges. It stood out against the blue sky. The object stayed stationary.

All five members of the Thunderbird aerial team saw it. They believed it was an astronomical body. It looked brighter than a nighttime star. The Air Force listed the conclusion on its Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, as probably a balloon, while case notes pointed to the planet Venus.
