Summary

On July 5, 1956, between Skagway and Juneau, Alaska, a military observer reported one object at about 1:35 p.m. local time. It was a ground visual sighting made by a member of an Air Intelligence Service Squadron. The object was in view for about 1 minute.

The object was dark against a cloud background, seen at about 5 degrees elevation. It moved in flight from 10 degrees to 100 degrees azimuth. Its speed was about twice that of a DC-6 that flew the same route an hour earlier. Only a silhouette was seen, with no wings or tail. The object was seen both broadside and from the rear. The observer noted three bumps on the wings that looked like engine nacelles.

The Air Force noted the conflicting statement of bumps on wings yet no wings observed. Officials also reviewed whether the object could be a Soviet aircraft, but found no information identifying it as one. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded the report was probably an aircraft, consistent with the flight description and speed.
