Project Blue Book Case File
55 Utica St, Hamilton, New YorkMay 1954
Summary
On a May evening in 1954 in Hamilton, New York, a witness observed a faint, milky-colored object moving across the sky. The object appeared oval in shape and contained two faint reddish dots. It rose to an elevation of about 20 degrees above the horizon as the witness watched it travel roughly 20 degrees of arc across the southeastern sky.
The witness was outside observing the sky when the object appeared. The night was clear with no clouds and cool, dry weather. The object was positioned near Saturn in the sky. The witness listened carefully for any sound that might indicate an aircraft, but heard nothing. The sighting lasted about 30 minutes before the object passed behind buildings that blocked the view, ending the observation.
The Air Force questionnaire filled out by the witness requests detailed information about the sighting, including the witness's estimate of the object's distance, speed, and size. The witness indicated uncertainty about several aspects of the sighting. The file notes that the object's appearance and behavior were consistent with an aircraft sighting, though the lack of any audible engine noise made identification difficult.
The Air Force's evaluation of this case appears in the file as "unknown," meaning investigators could not determine a conventional explanation for what was observed. The complete case file, containing 9 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
