Summary

On February 21, 1961, around 12:30 a.m. local time, a civilian at the Winnemucca Hotel in Winnemucca, Nevada, reported what appeared to be an aerial explosion. He reported it to the radar site at Winnemucca, and the report was passed along through air defense channels. The location was placed about 40 miles west of Burns Junction.

Very little detail was given. The report did not include a description of the object or how long the event lasted.

The message noted that local radio news that morning reported pieces of a meteor falling in Oregon the night before. The reporting officer believed the sighting may have been a meteor, possibly a bolide. A request for more information was sent but not answered. The Air Force card states that no conclusion could be drawn from the information given.
