Summary
On September 21, 1960, a military pilot about 39 miles south of San Angelo, Texas, reported a sighting at 1922 (7:22 p.m.). Flying an F-102A at about 38,000 feet, the pilot saw a round object the size of a quarter with a fiery color and a long tail. It appeared like a shooting star. The object was first seen 18 degrees above the aircraft and disappeared about 5 degrees below it. Its flight path formed an arc, and it vanished instantly after about 5 seconds. There was no sound. The pilot felt it was a very large meteor or a possible satellite that burned on entering the atmosphere. The Air Force listed the case as a meteor of the fireball class.
