Summary
On October 15, 1959, a pilot saw a bright object about 25 miles west of Galena, Alaska. The sighting was reported through Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports.
The witness was Captain Phillip W. McIntosh, an all-weather fighter pilot, flying an Air Force jet at about 35,000 feet. He described a ball with a tail, about the size of a quarter held at arm's length, and orange in color. The tail was about eight to ten times the length of the object. He saw it at about the eleven o'clock position, nearly level. It traveled in a straight line on a slight descent and did not change course.
The object appeared to burn out toward the north. The pilot watched it for about 3 seconds. The record card noted the object was high and on a level flight path, and concluded the duration was typical of a meteor.
