Summary
On March 20, 1950, around 9:26 p.m., the crew of a commercial airliner reported a fast moving object about 15 miles north of Stuttgart, Arkansas. The plane, an airline flight that had left Memphis, Tennessee, was flying at 2,000 feet in clear weather. The captain pointed out the object to the co-pilot, and both men watched it pass in front of them and out of sight. It approached from the south on a north heading and was under observation for about 25 to 35 seconds.
The co-pilot, an Air Force reserve captain, said the object appeared circular, about 100 feet across, and disk shaped, with a height much less than its width. A very bright light blinked at the top center about three times per second. As it passed, he saw 9 to 12 oval portholes on the underside set in a circle, glowing with a soft purple light. The object was not spinning and flew in a straight line. Based on his experience, he estimated its speed at least 1,000 miles per hour. He saw no exhaust flames. A sketch was attached.
