Summary

On October 1, 1956, at 1:16 a.m., military personnel observed an unidentified object ten miles west of Carey Islands, Newfoundland. Two observers in a formation of F-86D aircraft spotted an elliptical, fireball-shaped object with a smoke trail lasting three to five seconds. The object made no sound and disintegrated, leaving blue smoke in a contrail pattern. It was described as traveling at an estimated speed of 700 to 1200 miles per hour in a straight line before disappearing at two o'clock elevation and twelve degrees elevation. The object was reported as orange-red in color. Weather conditions were clear with winds at 340 degrees and 15 knots. The Air Force concluded the sighting was possibly a meteor.
