Summary

In early November 1957, multiple witnesses across Illinois and Wisconsin reported seeing unusual glowing objects in the sky near the state border. The Air Force received reports of at least three separate sightings during this period, all within a few hours of each other.

The first sighting involved a large triangular object described as brilliant red with a green light in front and yellow or gray coloring in the rear. Witnesses reported hearing a low droning sound as the object moved slowly west to east and back again along the Illinois-Wisconsin border. The object remained visible for over thirty minutes.

A second report described an amber or orange triangular object about 200 feet in size, with a red light visible. This sighting lasted about five minutes. A third sighting involved a round, egg-like orange object about the size of a penny or nickel when viewed at arm's length. This object moved westward and slightly south, stopped, reversed direction eastward, then westward again before disappearing into trees. One witness reported the object was at the same level as his wife and appeared to emit a smell like hot metal with a pungent odor. The object remained visible for eight or nine minutes.

A newspaper account included in the file reported that a farmer's wife near Galesburg, Illinois spotted a "fiery orange" cigar or egg-shaped object around 3 a.m. on November 5. She watched it for two or three minutes before it moved slowly northward and disappeared. Similar reports came from near Spooner, Wisconsin and Chicago, where witnesses described bright, oval-shaped objects in the pre-dawn sky.

The case file notes clear weather conditions and includes wind data at various altitudes. The Air Force evaluation appears to list "unknown" as the conclusion. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 12 pages.
