Project Blue Book Case File
Williams Bay, WisconsinJuly 1959
Summary
On July 3, 1959, a man vacationing at Conference Point Camp in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, was lying on the grass during a group discussion when he noticed a bright point of light in the sky. He described the object as roughly the size of a pinhead, appearing to be sunlight reflecting off something metallic, possibly aluminum. The object seemed to have the general form of a jet aircraft, but it was moving at a speed much higher than any conventional jet he had ever observed in that area.
The witness watched the object travel across the sky, starting at about 19 to 38 degrees above the horizon and ending at about 72 to 77 degrees. He was looking generally westward when he first saw it and generally northwest when it disappeared. The weather was clear with warm conditions. Although other people were present with him at the camp, he did not believe they would have been able to see the object without sunglasses, and none were looking in the right direction anyway.
The witness took this sighting seriously enough to report it to two civilian UFO research organizations and to write to the Air Force on July 9, 1959. He stated that while a jet aircraft was the only conventional possibility he could imagine, he doubted the object was a standard operational jet. In response, the Air Force asked him to complete a formal technical questionnaire and submit it for analysis. When the Air Force examined the report, it concluded that the object was probably just an aircraft reflecting sunlight off its aluminum fuselage. The witness's own photograph of the area, taken after the incident, was returned to him, and the Air Force determined it contained no useful information.
