Summary

On July 5, 1954, military witnesses near White Wood, South Dakota, reported a huge object over the city. The sighting lasted about two hours. The object looked like a large star. It moved very slowly and appeared very low to the ground.

Aircraft were scrambled but could not make contact with the object. It was later reported moving west toward Deadwood, South Dakota, and it changed in brightness from dim to very bright. Residents of the town saw it.

A follow up message reported that the object was definitely a beacon, located about 14 miles southwest of Rapid City, South Dakota. The Air Force record card listed the cause as a beacon.
