Project Blue Book Case File
White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., November 1957November 1957
Summary
On November 11, 1957, around 5:15 to 5:20 p.m. GMT, a civilian and his family reported an object while driving on U.S. Route 60 near the West Virginia state line, headed toward White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The object looked like a 4-inch fountain pen held horizontally at arm's length. The sighting lasted about 3 minutes.
The object was to the left of the highway. It seemed to change color from orange to grey, while one end stayed a constant orange. There was no unusual noise. It appeared to follow an arch-like path toward the earth. The witness used 6 by 30 binoculars. He said it was not a jet or shooting star because it moved too slowly. The sky was clear at dusk.
An investigator collected weather data showing clear skies and 15-mile visibility. A weather official said he could not account for the sighting. The Air Force record did not give a firm conclusion. It noted that a balloon seen at dusk would appear orange, but said the object's direction of movement was not given, so an evaluation could not be made. It added that aircraft was also possible. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
