Project Blue Book Case File
WHITE PLAINS NY, July 1952July 1952
Summary
A woman in White Plains, New York, reported seeing two shiny, disk-shaped objects on July 17, 1952, at about 3:15 p.m. She was lying on a cot in her backyard when she heard a low whirling sound and noticed two small silver disks moving toward her from the north. As they drew closer, the objects grew larger, reminding her of two glowing crystal wheels. The rims appeared to be brilliant blue-white and dazzling, like diamonds. She watched for about sixty seconds as the objects traveled smoothly across the sky, maintaining their identical circular shape and moving as though attached to each other.
When the objects reached their largest size, they suddenly made a sharp right-angle turn and began to vanish, disappearing one at a time in what the witness described as moving through a side wing on a theatrical stage. At this moment, she noticed a pale gray rectangular framework behind the spheres, though she could only see the top bar and left corner. Throughout the sighting, the objects gave off a whirling noise that changed in pitch and volume. The witness later reported that the entire event, from first sighting to final disappearance, lasted about ninety seconds.
In a letter written more than a month after the sighting, the witness disclosed a striking detail she had initially withheld. When the objects tilted upward during their turn, she heard voices that seemed to be amplified and coming from inside the craft. She described the voices as beautiful, resembling those of eight to ten mature women speaking in a slow, quiet manner in a language unlike any she had ever heard. The voices ceased abruptly when the objects completed their maneuver and disappeared.
The Air Force investigation noted that the weather conditions at the time were clear with fifteen-mile visibility and light south winds. The objects were described in official reports as being exceptionally large, approximately the size of a Ferris wheel at their altitude, and an aircraft at the same height would have been indistinguishable in comparison. The official evaluation marked the case as unknown.
