Project Blue Book Case File
Warren, MichiganAugust 1958
Summary
On August 17, 1958, a civilian business machine repairman in Warren, Michigan, spotted an extremely bright object in the daylight sky near his home. At first he saw what appeared to be a ball shape through his field glasses, which revealed a large circular gray-white object with a bright center ring and another ring farther out. To the naked eye, the object looked roughly the size of a dime, though his field glasses suggested it was about 60 feet across. The man described it as brighter than Venus.
For the first five minutes, the object remained motionless. Then it began to move, rotating and arching across the sky before flipping over to reveal an elongated, bubbled shape. Within thirty seconds it sped toward the west-southwest and vanished. The entire sighting lasted approximately ten minutes. The observer heard no sound and saw no exhaust. He noted that four aircraft flying in formation passed between him and the object during the sighting.
The Air Force investigated through ground visual observation. The weather was clear with excellent visibility. A senior director from the 661st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron noted that the observer was extremely impressed by what he had seen. No photographs were taken, and no physical evidence was recovered.
The Air Force concluded the object was unidentified. The case file consists of 10 pages as held by the National Archives.
