Summary

On the night of August 21, 1957, near Uzundzhovo Airfield in Bulgaria, a foreign military officer driving through the country saw a lighted object in the sky. The sighting lasted about 30 minutes, from 2000 to 2030 (8:00 to 8:30 p.m.) local time. The witness said the light appeared, hung still about 1,000 to 1,500 feet up, then moved slowly on a level course while searchlights tracked it. The light would go out and the searchlights would turn off, then the pattern repeated about eight times. The object made no motor noise. During one pass, a jet took off, climbed past the object, then turned and landed. The Air Force record card calls this a likely nighttime anti-aircraft tracking exercise. It says the object could have been a balloon with a light or a lighted target used in training.
