Summary

Starting July 7, 1958, people across a wide area of Uruguay reported a glowing object in the sky. The reports came from many departments of the country, from Rocha to Soriano. Witnesses described a self-luminous, spherical object that gave off a bluish-white light. Reports came at about 1430 (2:30 p.m.) and again near 2030 (8:30 p.m.). Some people heard a sound like an explosion. Air France and Iberia airline crews also reported a strange light.

A Uruguayan committee investigated the case and held five meetings. The committee concluded the object showed special, hard to explain features. The U.S. Air Force reviewed the material along with reports from a wider area. On the Project 10073 record card, the Air Force marked the case as astronomical, concluding it was a meteor sighting. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
