Summary

In January 1958, a woman in Uruguay saw an unidentified object in the night sky that maneuvered in an unusual way and gave off a distinctive bluish-white light. The sighting was brief, lasting only a few seconds, but the observer noted that the object moved with apparent control and purpose.

According to the witness, the object appeared suddenly, like a light turning on. It traveled a short distance, then climbed steeply upward before leveling off and continuing in a straight line for two or three seconds. It then disappeared or went dark. The object had a bright white color with a bluish tint. Most remarkably, as it changed direction, it gave off smoke or a haze. The witness emphasized that this smoke appeared only when the object was maneuvering, not at any other time.

The witness believed the object was being deliberately controlled. She reasoned that an uncontrolled, inert object would have fallen to the ground due to gravity. A second witness, a young person, corroborated the sighting but disagreed on one detail: whether the object had left a trail of smoke.

A local UFO research organization called CIOOVI (Centro de Investigaciones de Objetos Voladores Inidentificados) investigated the case. They considered the main witness credible and noted that the object's behavior matched patterns they had observed in other reports. They concluded it could not have been an airplane, satellite, or known natural phenomenon. However, the Air Force's formal evaluation on the case record indicates only "Probably Balloon" as a conclusion. The case file does not explain the reasoning behind that assessment.

This case file, consisting of eight pages held by the National Archives, documents the investigation as it was conducted.
