Project Blue Book Case File
Tyndall AFB, FloridaDecember 1961
Summary
At 0545 (5:45 a.m.) on December 21, 1961, a witness at Capehart Housing on Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida observed an object in the sky that he described as elliptical with a radiant, star-like appearance. The object moved from northwest to northeast across the sky. The witness watched it for five minutes before calling the base weather station at 0555 (5:55 a.m.) to alert personnel to look for it.
The witness later called back and spoke with the lieutenant from the weather station, who reported that he had seen a bright object in the northeast and suggested it might be a bright star. After reporting to work, the witness checked multiple sources and considered whether the object could be Echo, a well-known satellite at the time. He calculated when Echo should return based on orbital mechanics and concluded that what he had seen was a new space vehicle of which he was previously unaware.
The witness was an experienced observer who had filed two previous UFO reports, in September 1960 and May 1961. He noted that his television set had been experiencing interference that morning, which he mentioned because he had discovered his earlier UFO sightings during similar TV interference events. He believed his experience observing space vehicles gave him credible expertise in estimating the object's height (approximately 800 miles) and speed (approximately 18,000 miles per hour).
Weather data from the time of the sighting showed an inversion layer in the Tyndall area. Air Force investigators concluded that the witness had likely observed the bright star Betelgeuse, which was positioned at an azimuth matching the witness's report. The investigators noted that atmospheric refraction of the star could have produced the radiant effect the witness described, and they suggested that his imagination had filled in the rest of the details. They also pointed out that the witness's tendency to estimate speeds and distances without supporting data (such as actual object size or flight path confirmation) undermined his credibility.
The Air Force evaluated this case as unidentified. The full case file, comprising 53 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
