Troy Peak Nevada, November 1958November 1958
Summary
On November 13, 1958, military radar operators near Tonopah Airport, Nevada, tracked unidentified objects. Four separate sightings were made on radar during one day. The first contact was at 4:29 p.m. local time.
All four objects appeared in the same area and at the same altitude. They were fairly stationary, moving slowly as if drifting east-northeast. They were tracked off and on for about eight hours. A weather balloon was also seen visually passing over the radar site. The objects were detected on ground radar equipment.
The weather was clear and calm, with a temperature inversion at about 60,000 feet and winds from the west. The preparing officer believed the objects could be weather balloons because of their flight characteristics, which showed them drifting in the winds aloft. The Air Force concluded the objects were balloons.
