Project Blue Book Case File
Tooma, N.S.W., Australia, January 1954January 1954
Summary
On January 5, 1954, at about 10 p.m. local time (about noon by one witness account) near Tooma, New South Wales, Australia, civilians reported three objects. The witnesses were on a fishing holiday and said they had not seen news of earlier sightings. They used Polaroid sunglasses. There were two main observers plus a third. The sighting lasted about 10 to 15 minutes.
The objects were oval or circular and gave off bright, steady lights similar to a bright star. They were seen at about 12 degrees elevation in the east, each weaving about in flight toward the west. They climbed to about 35 degrees elevation. They flew a generally straight path except for maneuvers in formation, moving in a line astern formation and then turning to the south. The lights kept their intensity and just grew smaller with distance.
The Air Force record lists the conclusion as aircraft. The report said the flight duration and general description were consistent with aircraft observation. Records showed no balloons released until later, and the witnesses were near a Melbourne to Canberra air route.
