Summary
On January 12, 1951, about 10 p.m. Eastern time, two Air Force officers reported a bright object near Stewart Air Force Base in New York. The report is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
One observer, a lieutenant, described a single object that was unusually bright and brilliant white, three or four times as large as a star. As it rose, it changed color to a hazy yellow, then green, then red, and left a tail of light behind. It made no sound and seemed to move very fast in a zigzag pattern. He said it did not appear to be conventional aircraft. A second observer described a white light like a very bright star, round in shape, with rapid upward motion and an erratic sidewise motion. The observation point was on a hill about 100 feet high, and visibility was excellent.
No weather balloons were released and no local aircraft were taking off or landing during the sighting. The Air Force listed its conclusion as a balloon.
